Several Ministers have asked the President to remove C. D. Wickramaratne with immediate effect in response to a contentious letter sent by the IGP to the Defence Secretary, informed sources stated.
This transpired at the Cabinet meeting held yesterday (04).
At that time, when some Ministers questioned Tiran Alles, the Minister of Public Security, he said that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had long been warned about.
The letter sent by the IGP to the Defence Secretary was regarding intelligence information on a purported terrorist attack.
The letter claimed that terrorist attacks may be carried out today (05) and tomorrow (06) to mark ‘Black July’.
Concerns over such an attack were raised based on unconfirmed information received through intelligence sources.
However, the Defence Ministry requested the public not to panic about the intelligence information about a purported terrorist attack that is currently circulating on social media.
The Ministry stated that as maintaining public security and safety is of high priority, all measures will be taken to ensure a high degree of security while investigations will be carried into the intelligence information.
Therefore, the public should not panic, and should carry on with their day-to-day work, the Ministry added.
