Concerns are being raised about whether the Speaker of Parliament is able to nominate a Prime Minister.
According to Section 43 Subsection (3) of the Constitution, “The President shall appoint as Prime Minister the Member of Parliament who in his opinion is most likely to command the confidence of Parliament.”
However, Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe today (13) informed Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to nominate a Prime Minister who is acceptable to both the Government and Opposition.
