Police round up protest leaders; Seeks public assistance for identification

Two activists who helped lead mass protests that toppled Gotabaya Rajapaksa have been arrested while another was remanded, the Police said, as Parliament extended tough emergency laws imposed to restore order.

In separate statements on Wednesday (27), the Police said that they had arrested Activists Kusal Sandaruwan and Weranga Pushpika on unlawful assembly charges.

The Police have also released photographs of fourteen suspects wanted in connection with an arson attack on then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s home on the same day the President’s Office and residence were overrun.

The arrests came a day after a person identified as Dhaniz Ali was detained when he boarded a Dubai-bound flight at the country’s main airport.

He was arrested for forcibly entering the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation on 13 July.

Dhaniz was remanded by the Fort Magistrate’s Court until 05 August.

Meanwhile, a person, who was seen counting money that had been found at the President’s Residence, also been arrested.

The Police sought public assistance to identify other suspects who caused damage to or destruction to State property.
