HRW says President need to end crackdown; Address economic crisis

President Ranil Wickremesinghe should ensure that his administration adopts measures to protect the basic rights of all Sri Lankans, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated in a letter published today (09) outlining key human rights concerns.

“President Wickremesinghe faces immense challenges, but heightened surveillance of activist groups, imposing draconian emergency regulations, and politically motivated arrests of protest leaders will not solve Sri Lanka’s dire problems,” said its South Asia Director Meenakshi Ganguly.

“Sri Lanka’s partners have been clear that international economic assistance will only be effective if the Government adheres to human rights and the rule of law and addresses the root causes of the crisis.”
