The Reverend Father Amila Jeewantha Peiris, who has been a key figure during the protracted anti-Government protests in the crisis-hit island nation, was released on bail after being surrendered before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (12).
He was ordered to be released on two sureties of Rs.500,000 by Magistrate Thilina Gamage in connection with two cases filed against him by Fort Police and Slave Island Police.
The Fort Police and Slave Island Police had filed two separate B Reports against Father Peiris over two incidents relating to the anti-Government protests.
He had been at the forefront of public protests against the Rajapaksa regime.
Father Peiris has also filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court seeking an order preventing Authorities from arresting him.
